Dark Tavern (DT) is a technology based forum. Although this includes hacking and security, the forum is also focused on more basic aspects of computing and technology. This includes iPhone/iPods, PSPs, and Gaming. We also have a section for Coding and Programming. Be sure to check this out to get a jump start at learning or learn a few tricks! Dark Tavern is a general place to be, don't be afraid to express yourself, talk about your day, or discuss what is on your mind. Hacking is only a subset of Dark Tavern, so don't be worried about it being solely focused on that aspect, a usual downfall of most sites.

Turn off register-to-view, then try again.

Thanks for the suggestion. We had to turn that off due to the sources available on our forum. We had a large number of visitors viewing the information as a guest and never registering. We will consider it in the future though!

That makes no sense whatsoever. What problem does disabling public view solve?

Do you feel better having thousands of abandoned accounts on your server than to have loads of guests? All the accounts do is take up space, a big amount guests shows that your forum is successful.

Sure you want people to give something in return for what they get, but some people just don't have anything to give, and forcing guests to register is not going to solve that problem. A public forum allows everybody to view your content, and only the people interested in giving or saying thanks will register. Motivate, don't force.

"Due to the sources available on our forum"? If it's so good, then why can't guests see it? If I'd write something good I'd want everybody to know about it. Makes sense, no?

Anyway, it's your forum. Good luck with that.

By sources I mean rare hacking sources. We had a large amount of visitors just grabbing the source and leaving. They weren't coming back. They got what they came for and left. If everyone did that we would not get anywhere in terms of growth and activity. Guests can see what we have to offer via topic titles. Sure this is a inconvenience to some and a small majority do not register and simply leave, but those that take a few minutes out of their time to register help us grow.

I greatly appreciate your suggestion and comments. We took this under heavy consideration before requiring guests to register in order to view post content. We feel we will have better success rate if this is enabled, compared to a guest grabbing what they came for and leaving.

Also, I feel it is better to have a higher active users rate than number guests or member count.

So now you have a large amount of one-time users just grabbing the source and leaving. Does that make you feel better?

They weren't coming back. They got what they came for and left. If everyone did that we would not get anywhere in terms of growth and activity.

I wouldn't be so sure. If it's good, then people will talk, more people will come to your forum and some will leave after they got what they found, others want to be part of the fun and register. Trust me, it's better to have a small group of active users than thousands of one-day accounts. The last thing you want is the majority of your forum posts containing "thx".

Guests can see what we have to offer via topic titles. Sure this is a inconvenience to some and a small majority do not register and simply leave, but those that take a few minutes out of their time to register help us grow.

It's a major inconvenience. Registration is a bitch in all of the major forum software packages. You will lose users by forcing them to register. Registration doesn't make your forum grow, activity does. Forcing everybody to register is not going to make your forum any more active, and the forced introduction and "thanks" posts will decrease the overall quality of the posts in your forum.

Also, I feel it is better to have a higher active users rate than number guests or member count.

Exactly! Then why don't you turn off register-to-view and see how mostly active users will register?

Hi, this is Cris from the aforementioned site.

G-Brain, I appreciate your comments, very much so, as they are quite helpful in terms of a guest's view of the site. I can agree with you in that allowing guests to view parts of the forum can be beneficial to our traffic.

However, the problem lies with some of our forum modifications - not so much an unwillingness to support the feature. Due to a few of our forum add-ons, guests cannot view post content, regardless of member group set. Trust me, we're still working on allowing them to see the content, but at the moment it's a bit unfeasible. I apologize for any inconvenience that the lack of this feature may cause you our potential members.
