| The obvious is are all the sticks of the same type? The mobo may not be able to handle a RAM configuration of different types and/or sizes.
What is the current configuration you are trying? Have you tried the stick by itself to check that is works in isolation? There may be a configuration in the BIOS that will allow you to use different sizes at once. |

| all memory sticks are out except the 1 gig stick. it only works in slot 1, computer runs fine, except it thinks and only utilizes 256 megs of ram.

| Sounds fishy to me... When you had the 2x256MB sticks in did you mobo correctly recognise them both?
Where did you buy the RAM? You sure someone hasn't sold you either a duff stick or a 256 stick for the price of a 1GB?
