I get the impression that the Windows 7 launch is a lot like seeing an old girlfriend suddenly show up on your doorstep wanting to get back together. She's had some work done, apparently: stomach stapling to take off some of the weight, breast augmentation, and a radical nosejob to make her look as much like your current girlfriend as medical science will allow.

She's pretty, of course, almost too pretty. She still wears far too much makeup and carries that desperate look in her eyes. The fragrant haze around her is the perfume she overuses to mask the scent of failure.

But standing there in that low-cut top, you'd almost forget for a moment what a psycho she was- how she used to shut down in the middle of a date and forget everything you were talking about and how she was only happy when you were buying her things. You'd almost forget about carrying around her legacy baggage or those nights when, for seemingly no reason at all, she would simply stop speaking to you and when you asked what was wrong she'd just spit a string of hex code at you and expect you to figure it out.

You complained about her for years before finally deciding to get rid of her, and here she is again. Though, somehow she seems like a completely different person now.

"I'm up here," she says when she catches you staring at her chest.

Tempted though you may be, you know that over time she'll get bored and slow down on you just like she always does. And then you'll be right back where you started: trapped. She keeps you by convincing you that you don't have a choice. You're just not smart enough for one option or rich enough to afford the other.

"But I'm different now," she says, batting her eyes innocently. "I've changed."

Indeed she has. Apparently, she's really into Cabala now or something like that. It's helped her discover loads of untapped potential in herself. But it also means that you'll have to buy all new furniture to fit with her understanding of feng shui. That's not the only change she has in store for you. The minute you let her move in, she'll have a new alarm system put in that succeeds only in preventing your friends from coming over on poker night.

She doesn't love you, but she doesn't hate you, either. The truth is that she couldn't care less one way or the other. She's here because she doesn't want to be alone. Like all human beings, especially those well past their prime, she wants to feel wanted and, after a string of lost jobs and bad investments, she needs a place to stay.

But all in all, she's OK. She's a seven. She'll do, I guess.

So a while ago i hacked a server, got as far as uploading a shell. I then put it aside and moved on to the next server intending to come back later to patch the system and root it. Well a few days had past before i got back to it but yesterday when i finally had time to play i find another hacker has come along and uploaded his own shell, he even got a copy of the shadow file for me. My next move was to locate and rm his shell which really i just replaced with a little hacker to hacker message, then patch the issue that let both him and me in. however before i could manage to make the fix work he had gotten back in and started dropping shells all over, im guessing he saw my little message and was moving as fast as he could but all the shells had the same name. So i made sure the fix worked then a quick find command got all his shells and he was done so i won that little hacker battle but it reminded me of that scene in Hackers when zero hacked into otv and acid finds him in her system and she boots zero out. This is the first time that has ever happen to me so it was rather exciting and while i have no idea who the other hacker was that bitch got owned. thats all i got for now, peace.

Fuck dude I almost killed my laptop lat night by spilling a large 24oz cup of beer on it.

It wouldnt turn on at first but i hung it upside down overnight and tossed it out in the sun for a couple hours this morning, I think the only thing that is wrong i the speakers. Luckily its less than a one year old machine and HP has a 1 year warrenty. But then I gotta mail it in and wait a month or towo.

I am getting seriously pissed off with all the cretins on the internet these days who cannot accept the FACT (no pun intended ) that piracy can be 100.0% ethical.

iPhone appstore apps are the best example I can think of. The appstore is fundamentally broken - apple's review process is fucked and inconsistent, some 14yo's first ever application can be sold for £12.99 despite being utterly useless, and only a handful of apps have trial versions. Most of the time if you don't have a good recommendation it's pretty much pot luck and if you make a bad choice and buy something you don't like or won't ever use again, you've wasted money. It's possible (if you're persistent and annoying like me) to get Apple to refund you, but its at their discretion and its a lot of hassle.

I think it's entirely ethical to use (for example) Installous to try out appstore apps/games before buying them. As a developer I can't really justify stealing a £3 or £5 application from another developer, especially if it's really useful. I always buy any games or apps that I like and want to continue using, but I refuse to be ripped off so I always check stuff out with the cracked version first. For some reason that I can't fathom, my ethical form of piracy is somehow frowned on by pretty much every iphone developer community I can find. Even mentioning this subject, despite my insistence that I always buy stuff that I use more than once, sends them into fits of childish rage and stupid comments and frequently gets me banned from channels.

It goes to even stupider extremes than this.

About a year ago I bought iBlacklist for my iPhone 3G, a handy app for jailbroken phones that gave you black/white lists for calls and sms but the feature I loved the most was automatically rejecting calls from withheld numbers. Recently I upgraded to the 3G-S, and as it has a different hardware UUID I needed a new key, so I contacted the developer who told me that the license I bought was for the device, not me (the user), and that I needed to buy a new license for $12 for my new phone. Needless to say, I tore him apart with the same ruthless sledgehammer linguistics that I apply to recruitment spammers and told him I'd be using a cracked version of his program from now on and telling everyone I know with an iPhone not to use his software. I paid to use that application, where the fuck does he get off telling me I have to pay again? It was $12 - ridiculously overpriced for something that just blacklists numbers, a minor convenience at most. I had sold the 3G to someone on ebay and didn't give them the iBlacklist code. If the developer wanted to insure against that guy having the code and using it when he'd transferred the license to me and my new phone, he should have built an internet activation system. His fault, not mine, and I sure as hell am not paying for his incompetence.

Finally I'll finish by ranting about SBSettings, also for the iphone. SBSettings is free, but has adverts plastered on the interface. I abhor advertising and refuse to view it anywhere - my browsers all have ad blocking and so does my phone, cydia developers who rely on ads have developed some clever tricks to prevent blocking but they're still easy to defeat. So now that redsn0w (the 3G-S jailbreak) is out, I installed winterboard and sbsettings and immediately got pissed off with the ads - who wants to open an application on their phone and see a banner advertising fart-sound applications? It took me 5 mins to hex them out of the application, but as it's free I felt slightly bad for killing the developer's revenue stream, so I hopped onto irc where he hangs out and asked how much ad revenue SBSettings gets from page impressions from one user over a year. It really can't be much. Someone told me roughly $1.33 per 1000 impressions, I maybe open that part of the application 5-7 times a day at most, some days not at all. Assuming 7 times every day for a year, that's $3.40. I'd happily donate $5 to the developer, but a) the guy has no donate button on his website, and b) pretty much everyone in the channel flamed the fuck out of me for even suggesting this idea.

Has the entire world gone insane? Are we so stuck on our rules that we can't adapt to new business models and revenue systems? Cydia is supposedly a community resource with community repositories, how can it be so utterly clusterfucked by the kind of stupid rules and broken ideology that govern/ruin the corporate world? It should be obvious, particularly to developers who I always thought were generally quite logical people, that if someone wants to hack adverts out of a program they are /going to do it regardless/. Why is there such a problem with accepting a donation from them in lieu of ad revenue? It's stupidity on a level I can't even get my head around. It feels like we're being dragged back into the Bronze age by fuckwits who can't embrace the internet and what it means for us.

Trying to make sensible points like this seems to trigger comments like "oh you're just trying to justify it" and yadayadayada. It's like the drugs war, people have been programmed to "just say no" to piracy and in certain online communities any discussion of it, ethical or otherwise, is completely outlawed and frowned upon even when it's entirely (in my opinion) ethical.

TPB's flattr looks very interesting, the name suggests it's donation-based so hopefully they will start changing things for the better..

I found out how to hack my local takeaways by ordering via hungryhouse.co.uk. You can place an order and make one item on the order free (quantity doesn't matter, so you can make the quantity of the free item 10 if you're really that crazy).

1. Go to hungry house, enter your postcode. Find two local takeaways with similar menus, ideally with an item on both menus that's named exactly the same, i.e. "lamb vindaloo" on both menus. Find an item like this that you want to get for free.

2. Decide which of the two places you want to order from. Open the /other/ one in a firefox tab (hahaha @ pr0ge ) and add the "to be free" item to your order.

3. Open the other takeaway place in a new tab, add everything else that you want to order your basket. Most places have minimum spends so you probably need to order at least £10 worth of food.

4. Go back to the first tab and click on the item you added to the basket to change its quantity, it doesn't matter if you actually change it or leave it the same, but click change.

5. The item should now be in your basket with price at £0.00, along with all the other stuff you added on the second tab. When you click submit order it will go to the takeaway place that you ordered in the second tab.

I did this adding some free naan bread to my curry order, it went through, order accepted, card charged for cost minus £4 but when the guy turned up at my door he was asking for the money, i dont know what he'd have done if i just said no im not paying, i didn't agree to that price etc, or i don't have the money... technically someone a little crazier than myself could have ordered 20 free vindaloos and just paid for the bread and rice, although I don't recommend this.
